Every now and then, something unexpected stops us in our tracks.

Recently at Lakeside Gardens, a Barred Owl made an appearance, perching peacefully on the fountain rock just outside our parking lot entrance. Our receptionist spotted him and snapped the photo, capturing a moment that became the highlight of our day.

Based on its round face, dark eyes, and distinctive striped pattern, this visitor appears to be a Barred Owl, a species native to British Columbia. Barred Owls are known for their calm presence and soft, expressive calls that sound like “Who cooks for you?” They tend to favour wooded areas near water, which makes our Nanaimo community the perfect place to hang out for a while.

While it may not be moving in permanently, the owl’s visit felt meaningful. Unhurried, observant, and completely at ease, he reminded us to slow down and notice what’s around us.

Moments like these are part of what brings us together and makes our communities feel special. Whether it’s a friendly conversation in the lobby, a familiar face at the front desk, or the surprise of a feathered visitor stopping by, it’s often the small, unplanned moments that mean the most.

If you’re thinking about retirement living, feel free to stop by and see what’s happening in our community. You never know what (or whoo) you might spot!
