At Lakeside Gardens Seniors Community, we believe that retirement living is about more than just comfort and care, it’s about connection, creativity, and being an active part of the wider community. Our residents and staff go above and beyond to make a positive impact, both within their own homes and in the greater Nanaimo area. We’re incredibly proud to share some of the recent recognitions other locations in the VRS Communities family have received and the inspiring efforts that earned them.

Orchard Gardens: Most Creative Fundraising Award from KGH Foundation

At Orchard Gardens, residents don’t just walk the walk, they rally the entire Kelowna community behind them. Orchard Gardens has become known for its annual Walker-thon, a beloved May event that blends fitness, philanthropy, and a whole lot of fun. Scheduled this year for May 14th, the Walker-thon brings together residents, staff, and local businesses in support of the KGH Foundation. Community members generously donate gift baskets and gift cards, which are raffled off to raise funds during the event.

Last year’s Walker-thon raised over $1,200 in a single day – a huge success that caught the attention of the KGH Foundation. We’re thrilled to share that Orchard Gardens was recently awarded the Most Creative Method of Donating award for their spirited efforts! From themed costumes and colourful signs to clever fundraising strategies, this event is a highlight of the spring season, and the team is aiming even higher this year. With the help of the community, they hope to double last year’s total and continue making a meaningful difference.

Ross Place: Six Years of Excellence in Victoria

When it comes to recognition, few communities shine quite like Ross Place. Located in the heart of Victoria, Ross Place has become a cornerstone of the retirement living scene, and the Victoria community has taken notice. For an impressive six years in a row, Ross Place has been awarded the Best of the City Awards, a local honour presented by Black Press and voted on by the readers of both Black Press and the Times Colonist.

This consistent recognition is a reflection of the vibrant lifestyle, dedicated staff, and welcoming atmosphere that Ross Place is known for. Whether it’s the active calendar of events, delicious dining, or the supportive sense of community, residents and their families know they’re in good hands. Awards like these remind us that when we prioritise dignity, connection, and joy in everyday living, the results speak for themselves.

Celebrating Generosity: Parkinson’s Awareness and Victoria Hospice Fundraising at Ross Place

While May is all about new growth and fresh initiatives, we also wanted to take a moment to recognise the meaningful efforts that took place in April at Ross Place. As part of Parkinson’s Awareness Month, they hosted a Fundraiser Happy Hour to support Parkinson Wellness Projects – an organisation located just across the street that some residents regularly attend. Thanks to the generosity of residents and staff, nearly $500 was raised, with VRS Communities contributing an additional $1,000 to the cause.

And the momentum continues at Ross Place in May! In support of Victoria Hospice, residents planned another Fundraiser Happy Hour, along with a spirited “Hike on Our Site” walk around the residence to raise even more for this important local organization. Residents raised almost $400 at this event. More than just fundraisers, these events provide moments of togetherness, purpose, and pride.

Across VRS Communities, there are countless examples of innovation, compassion, and excellence. From community fundraisers and volunteer initiatives to long-standing awards and local partnerships, our homes are truly embedded in the fabric of the neighbourhoods they serve. Whether we’re being recognised with awards or simply showing up for causes we care about, the heartbeat of VRS Communities is always our people. Thank you to all the residents, families, staff, and neighbours who make our communities so vibrant, generous, and full of life.

We’re honoured to celebrate these achievements and can’t wait to see what our communities accomplish next.

Pacific Carlton: Supporting the Canucks Autism Network

At Pacific Carlton, fundraising is always a team effort — and this spring’s event was no exception. The community came together for a Coffeehouse fundraiser in support of the Canucks Autism Network, organized by Tracy, Pacific Carlton’s Active Living Coordinator, and supported by residents, families, and friends. The event was well-received and raised an impressive $1,110 for the cause.

Adding a fun and unexpected twist to the day, General Manager Tanner showed his commitment by having his head shaved as part of the fundraising efforts, a bold gesture that certainly helped inspire extra support!

It’s moments like these that showcase the creativity, generosity, and heart that define life at Pacific Carlton.
